Victorian Bicycle

The Victorian Bicycle dates back to 1885. The first effective pre-Victorian Bicycle was invented in 1817 by a German Baron Karl.

The development of the Victorian safety bicycle in 1885 launched a craze by the women giving them a state of liberation.

The 1885 Victorian Bicycle had a revolutionary diamond pattern frame with a small front wheel. The frame was strong and compact. It was more efficient and lighter to use and then dominated the market.

The Victorian Bicycle  when first released to the public did have some steering issues because the head was sloppy and the forks had no set. However this problem was quickly rectified and the public took to the bike even more.

Features of the Victorian Bicycle

The physical feature of the Victorian Bicycle was shaped by notions of gender. The Victorian bicycles could not upset notions of appropriate behaviour by women and would not reveal parts of the women bodies.

Following the invention of the pneumatic tire in 1888, the Victorian safety bicycle became the public's bicycle of choice. This form of the Victorian Bicycle had wheels of approximately the same size and a chain which connected the pedals with the rear wheels.

By the later 1890s, various means were found to ensure women rode this style bike with due modesty. Women were also urged to wear heavy gloves to protect their hands when they paddled.

Later the invention of the Victorian Bicycle with a drop-frame safety bicycle, with two equal size wheels, allowed women to sit closer to the ground, and provided room for their heavy gowns.

Respectable women began to take up cycling without risk of injury or scandal. Many people feared that the unprecedented mobility of the Victorian Bicycle allowed women would corrupt them morally.

These gentlewomen had to satisfy strict criteria to qualify as guardians of virtue. Both local helmets used for riding the Victorian Bicycle required tough, virtually impenetrable shells that wouldn't allow a steel rod the size of a drinking straw to get in.

Use of the Victorian Bicycle

The Victorian Bicycle Era was the era that many sports were introduced into the world. The bicycle was a practical investment for men and women as a means of transportation and saving time. Not to mention, how it helped to emancipate women.

In cities, Victorian Bicycle helped reduce crowding in inner-city apartment by allowing workers to commute from single-family dwellings in the suburbs. The bicycles also reduced dependence on horses, and allowed people to travel into the country, since bicycles were three times as energy efficient as walking, and three to four times as fast.

Lifestyles and society changed significantly due to the development of the Victorian Bicycle. In short, the Victorian Bicycle was a technological revolution that made good roads and motorized transportation of every kind feasible.

The impact the Victorian Bicycle had on the emancipation of women back then was extremely relevant to the women's equal rights movement. The Victorian Bicycle was the first of its kind to be built to suit a female rider.

The bicycle became even more popular with the female crowd because it was to date one of the safest designs.

The much safer and affordable Victorian Bicycle truly gave women unprecedented mobility. A dramatic change in the family dynamic arose as a result of the freedom now bestowed upon the female population all due to the introduction of the bicycle.
